the book was a reprint, and some of the pictures were very difficult to see. I have one of the original books, and is very sharp and clear about the pictures and some the wording. This reprint is not so good.Product details

Boxing Antonio Diodoro De Pascual R G AllansonWinn B Fletcher Robinson 9781145200036 Books Reviews
Although considered outdated this book contains lots of valuable advice and techniques for developing ultimate punching power for self defense. The author goes into great detail about developing and using "the falling step" which will multiply the force of your left jab tremendously. It is a secret of true boxing and punching power which has been mostly forgotten. In fact, the instruction on how to perform "the falling step" is worth the price of the book. In fact, the author states that you should dedicate a long time to practicing and perfecting this technique before learning anything else. He says that developing this powerful left jab technique is the difference between being a world class striker or another mediocre boxer. As if that wasn`t awesome enough, the author also teaches low kicks, knee strikes, head locks and grappling methods that are no longer taught in boxing but are very effective for self defense. If you want to learn boxing as a martial art or for historical purposes this one of the very best old manuals I have ever seen. Jesus is your answer and God bless you )
RG. Allanson-Winn's "Boxing" treatise (1889) has seen better editions and reproductions. The cover of this book also does a disservice when a photograph of any number of anonymous fighters with handle bar mustaches and the old "attitude" (stance) would do. This isn't a modern boxing manual by any means; it remains, however, an essential text for anyone who wants to punch properly without a glove and generate power.
Allanson-Winn's description of "straight hitting" and "lead off" is priceless. Many texts gloss over this; the only description on par is Jack Dempsey's section on the "falling step" in his "Championship Boxing." This precursor to the jab is a full-body-power knockout blow if landed correctly. It's more akin to a fencing thrust than a modern jab, and Allanson-Winn's transitional diagram and explanation promotes full body alignment. You can learn the fundamentals of this punch from his text and illustration. Also beneficial Allanson-Winn's "cross counter" description. Keep in mind that, just like today, everyone has a variation. Some fighters of old could time this punch to grapevine a right cross around a jab. Allanson-Winn's approach is simpler, with a slight shift and a vertical right thrown over the top of an opponent's left lead.
Further, the author describes the key throws of pugilism. By Allanson-Winn's time, the London Prize Ring rules were waning. However, Allanson-Winn rightly defends practicing these in sparring because they are high-percentage throws. The cross-buttock, back heel and side fall loosely mirror throws founds in Judo and wrestling, but were intended for opponents who were trying to clinch or hit you, as counters to their throws, and don't require grips to execute (useful if your hands are damaged).
Even his small tips, such as using the forearms to deflect -- for self-defense purposes -- to avoid reliance on gloves that won't be there when you need them, are applicable. Later sections tackle the need for boxers to be able to counter kicks, to learn some basic wrestling shoots. Cross-training was advocated long ago, and mixed-martial arts weren't invented during the 1990s.
If pugilism and the old manuals interest you, as well as the grappling of pugilism, look for Kirk Lawson's archival efforts and writings online.
