I learned so much about Gertrude Stein in this biography written by Linda Wagner-Martin. She packs so much information about Gertrude's life, which includes information about her family, her life in Paris with Picasso and Matisse, her experience during two World Wars, her private life with Alice and her persistence in getting her work published. Gertrude steered the course of her own life bravely. I am now looking forward to reading her published work.Product details

I admit that I have never heard of Gertrude Stein until I read this book. This biography shows how strong Stein was. While, this book is a little dry sometimes, it still shows a fascinating woman.

I knew little of Gertrude Stein, other than her portrayal by Kathy Bates in the Woody Allen movie, Midnight in Paris. Ms. Bates made her come into my radar as an interesting woman, but Linda Wagner-Martin has made her fascinating to me. This superbly researched biography takes readers deep into Gertrude's childhood and adolescence, allowing the reader to draw many conclusions about how those early relationships and experiences shaped her writing and actions in later years. We, of course, get to be the fly on the wall during her time in Paris as The Ultimate Hostess and perhaps, the Dominant Force in so many artists and writers lives. We get to experience two wars and what Gertrude did to survive. At times I felt the book drag a bit, when the sheer number of her acquaintances and impact became almost overwhelming. Her relationship with Alice B Toklas is explored, and we get insight into her relationships with Matisse, Hemingway, Picasso,Fitzgerald and Wilder, among others. I believe this book would make a compelling book discussion selection, opening so many avenues for exploration and debate.

So detailed in terms of every friend and place I couldn't follow the story line. It read like an encyclopedia
Fantastically interesting book on the incredible life if a famous woman who took on life by the ears and lived it her own way .
I totally enjoyed the beginning of the book. The author gave a vivid account of Stein's early home life She wrote with the clarity which gave me a precise picture of the dynamics which often explained the divisions in the family later in the book. As I continued to read, I especially enjoyed the parts which described Gertrude's active life. I loved the sections when she actually quoted Gertrude which let me see and hear and feel her as a person and as a writer who desperately tried to get her works published.. However, then Martin introduced endless "pages" of names of people who surrounded Stein as she became more and more well known. I understand the biographer's motivation in listing reams and reams of famous and not so famous people who came to visit. But it was so boring. Just when I was ready to delete the book, Martin shifted gears and went into detail of Stein's involvement in the Great War. It was such a relief. I absolutely loved the scenes with "auntie". Much too soon Martin began name dropping again.She did the same with Leo and Hemingway. That's when I gave up.
I will look for another book about Gertrude Stein's life
A very interesting read. Though I was familiar with the subject, I thought this volume had a lot to add in understanding the moods of the legend. It gave the reader a fine over all perspective of Stein's influence on the art world at that period, and of her artistic contribution as well.
